Steven Kennard Woodturner Gallery four

Steven Kennard Woodturner, Furniture Maker

What would you put in a special box? Special things: a few odd antique buttons, some tiny polished stones, a lock of baby hair, a baby tooth or baby bracelet from each child....

Teardrop box
"Teardrop"
box

The almost seamless fit to this beautiful box makes it hard to believe that it comes apart. It has been likened to a Hershey's Kiss, although when I first made it I lived in England and had never seen one. It is available in Cocobolo or African Blackwood. Perfect in itself, this would be the ultimate box in which to give a piece of precious jewellery.

African Blackwood Size: Approximately 70 mm diameter x 80 mm high
Cocobolo Size: Approximately 75 mm diameter x 105 mm high

Saturn Box

"Saturn" box

This box is turned and textured in African Blackwood. When I first finish a box I frequently have to put it away for a little while and do something else. The intense period of design and creation seems to blind me to that piece temporarily. This was true of this Saturn Box, as when I completed it I wasn't sure I liked it. My wife convinced me to enter it for the 'Best New Product' at the NS Designer Crafts Council where it won. This was my first box in the Astronomy theme.

Size: Approximately 70 mm diameter x 75 mm tall

Drop box
"Drop" box

Inspired by a drop of water falling into liquid,
the quality of the African Blackwood it is made from gives this box a lovely fluidity.
Tom Mason of the Halifax Chronicle Herald wrote of this box: "A wooden drop of liquid compresses a pond shaped box into a distinctive doughnut, as if frozen by high-speed photography."

Size: Approximately 65 mm diameter x 70 mm tall
I have made a series of drops, starting long and ending with the drop quite low in the base, which makes a lovely grouping.

Tray Box
"Tray" box

This African Blackwood box has its own secret, the French Boxwood tray that seats so snugly into the base, such a good fit that it's almost pulled down by suction. The ring post in the tray also serves to lift it up to store treasures underneath in the black interior. Part of the lid is textured in contrast.

Size: Approximately 65 mm diameter x 30 mm tall

Adjustable height candlestick
Adjustable height candlestick

This unusual candlestick is a reproduction of an 18th century one. I love to burn candles, find them to be romantic and mood enhancing and consequently am always on the lookout for different candlesticks. The arms twist up and down the threaded column, incorporating at the base a hand grip for carrying it. Taking up less space than a full size candleabra, it makes a conversation piece for dining table or living room. To order only.

Size: Approximately 325 mm high 200 mm wide

Candelabra
Candelabra

This elegant candelabra was made from French Walnut from my time in the Dordogne and has a natural beeswax finish. It takes a 10" or 12" taper
Size: approx. 260 mm diameter x 400 mm high
